Modifications and self-pacing within your own limits is encouraged. The workout consists of circuits and drills. Minute-long reps of resistance exercises, squats, tricep dips etc. Includes mat work for core stregthening.
Babies and kids of all ages are welcome. The instructor is flexible and will modify activities for moms with babies who insist on being held, rocked, fed, or anything in between. Modifications are explained in "Levels" 1, 2, or 3 increasing in difficulty. Modifications are general and only made specific for expecting moms.
Your baby is expected to stay in the bucket seat during class. Not everyone had babies only 3 of us out of the 12 attendees. The class is pretty fast-paced and if you have to stop to tend to crying baby you may miss something.
The music is also as loud in this class as it is in any other of their classes, so if your baby cries you might not hear them right away. No one without a baby really seemed bothered by the babies in the class. This is definitely a great workout and completing this class really feels you with a sense of accomplishment! Expect planks, squats, pulses, light weights and resistance exercises.
Babies up to 18mos are welcome, although they should be in a baby carrier if they are mobile. Non-crawlers are welcome to play on a mat or blanket next to you. Two moms wore their babies and two moms let their babies lay on blankets on the floor to stare at the mirrors or to do some tummy time. The floor is a gymnastics floor soft and foam-like and is perfect for laying the little ones down for a bit.
She even offered to hold the babies if they started crying. I felt that, although baby was optional, this class really catered to moms which is a major plus. Appropriate for all levels of experience. The class ends with some floor exercises with your baby out of the carrier.
I have never taken a Zumba class before and I was nervous to attempt it for the first time especially with a baby strapped to me. Susan lead us through a series of dance moves to pop and oldie songs everyone was singing along. She demonstrated moves for us while encouraging us to keep moving and maintain our heart rate. Rest breaks were encouraged and she checked in with us to make sure we were feeling okay after each song. My daughter is only 12 weeks so I had her facing me, however the other baby in class was about 6 mos and was able to face out in her carrier - and I am pretty sure that baby had the most fun out of anyone taking the class squealing with delight with each twist and turn.
My daughter found the bopping to be soothing and napped through the Zumba portion of class bonus. This class will also serve as a community-building space where you can connect with other women sharing a similar journey.
